Description

Messier 37 is a striking open cluster in Auriga with a mix of red giants, white dwarfs (not visible here) and mostly bluish medium aged stars.

The brightest red giant, HD 39183, is the magnitude 9.2 star near the center of the cluster.  The white dwarf stars are around magnitude 23 and are too dim to show in this image taken with an 8" reflector.

Esitmated to be around 5000 light years distant and 40 light years across, M37 is well-worth a visit when visually observing in the northern latitude winter skies.

I captured data for this image over 26 sessions between Sept 2020 and November 2021.

Calibrated with SiriL and gess, registered, stacked and post-processed in PixInsight.

Title: M 37 Core at 1:1 Zoom Level

Description: A 1:1 zoom level look at the core gives a better sense of the many stars in the cluster. Some of the stars are field stars not associated with the cluster, but nevertheless, a very rich and colorful region.
